The Council is a public non-profit organization committed to the prevention of alcohol and substance abuse. We provide information, referral, and educational services to individuals and families to promote personal growth and informed choices. We envision a future in which individuals have chosen to live free from the harm of substance abuse.

ABOUT THE COUNCIL

1. What is ADAC (the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Delaware County)?

ADAC is a public, non-profit agency dedicated to the prevention of alcohol and other drug abuse in Delaware County. Its mission statement concludes: "We envision a future in which individuals have chosen to live free from the harm of substance abuse."

2. Where is it located?

The Council’s offices are located at 72 Main Street in Delhi.

3. What does ADAC do?

In general, ADAC’s responsibilities include prevention, education, information, intervention, referral, and advocacy. More specifically, it provides prevention education programs for the county’s schools, teaches the Drinking Driver Rehabilitation Program, provides drug-free workplace programs for businesses, conducts interventions and publishes a quarterly newsletter for its members.

An intervention is a controlled and supervised process by which family and friends confront——with compassion and understanding——a person with the fact of his/her addiction. The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council is qualified to conduct interventions for area residents.

5. Is ADAC a Delaware County agency? back to top

No. ADAC is an incorporated public agency. Much of ADAC’s funding comes from the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. Other sources of funding include grants, contributions, and membership fees.

6. Can ADAC help someone with a drug or alcohol problem? back to top

ADAC can refer persons in need to the appropriate source of help, but its employees do not provide counseling.

7. How does ADAC differ from the Delaware County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services in Hamden? back to top

The "Hamden Clinic," as it is often called, is "an addictions outpatient treatment agency serving the needs of all those whose lives have been affected by the abuse of alcohol and drugs." Many of the persons who contact ADAC for help are referred to this agency for consultation, evaluation, and/or counseling.

8. Who works at ADAC? back to top

ADAC’s staff consists of Executive Director David Ramsey, Executive Assistant Mary Rosenthal, and Prevention Educator Michael Durham. It also calls on a network of volunteers to lend a hand at various events.
