SIX STEPS: TALKING TO TEENS ABOUT ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS

STEP 1: “I CARE”

(I care about you)

STEP 2: “ I SEE”

(I see that you are struggling in school)

STEP 3:  “I FEEL”

(I feel worried that something is going on that you are not telling me)

STEP 4: “I LISTEN”

(I am here to listen)

STEP 5: “I WANT”

(I want you to know, I am here anytime you need me)

STEP 6: “I WILL”

(I will do anything I can to support you)

Remember, the best time to talk with someone who you are concerned about is when:

  • you feel comfortable and private

  • you’re likely not to be disturbed

  • you have time to talk things through

  • when neither of you have been drinking or doing drugs
